Remembering Ellen Strange

Holcombe Hill – Sunday, 10th July 2022

The 2022 Ellen Strange commemoration event to remember all domestic violence victims. Join us for the 7th Annual Ellen Strange Memorial Walk.

On Holcombe Moor in Lancashire, the world’s oldest domestic violence memorial site is inspiring the current generation of campaigners and survivors of domestic violence, to raise awareness, garner support and offer help to those in dire need.

Ellen Strange was murdered by her husband, John Broadley, on Holcombe Moor on 26 January 1761. Her family and/or local people raised a pile of stones in her memory. This was called “Ellen Strange” on the first Ordnance Survey map in 1844-47. Over time, the true story has become clouded in mystery until local author John Simpson, following his exhaustive research into events more than 200 years earlier, published the results in 1989. The stone memorial is believed to be the only man-made monument to a victim of domestic abuse in the world.

Meet and proceeding from Holcombe Church at 10.30am, we will join our friends from Unite the Union and Bolton TUC on the walk up to the Cairn, just 45 minutes away.

There will be readings on the hill before the names of all those murdered in 20-21 will be read out and remembered upon the laying of a floral tribute.

We will then meet for a refreshments in the church hall. Please book your free place on Eventbrite so we can ensure sufficient refreshments and gift packs for everyone in attendance. Sponsor forms are available for those wishing to take part as a sponsored walk.
